LIFE; and a Communion

Life is begotten and sustained by life. It is God's ordained law across all creation. To the believer is given life in the spirit, but his life springs from, and is nourished by, life--the life of God, as He has revealed Himself to us in Yeshua, His living incarnation. We have life, but only as it is fed and nourished within the life of our living Savior. Yet how richly and divinely fed we are, if we but come to the table prepared for us from before the beginning.

Running On Empty – that's an old song I remember; but you know, my friends, it should be a banner phrase in the minds of every believer -- perhaps then we would better remember our condition.

Heavenly thirst,

is an emotion of the soul,

expressed in the Spirit,

and fulfilled in the heart;

it is an indicator of life, my friends.

The Burden

Every believer is burdened with a daily conflict; even an hourly struggle. This continual warfare is between our fallen nature, with its corrupt body; and the holy and divine nature of God, which is imparted to all of us with the coming of the Holy Spirit. The good news is that this struggle lasts during the whole of our lives upon earth. The even
better news is that it increases in intensity as we grow in grace and knowledge. This internal warfare is pretty much experienced by all God's family. We all know what a burden it is to have this daily conflict with our bodies of sin. It is the greatest burden that most of us will ever have on earth. We all have our trials - many are heavy trials. But of all the burdens that I am aware of — the daily conflict with the workings of my corrupt heart — my fallen and depraved nature -- perpetually lusting with the eye, catching my affections, ensnaring my tongue, drawing me in --- this unrelenting fight forms the heaviest and seemingly most consistent burden I have to carry. The conflict I daily and sometimes hourly feel within my own heart and soul has been my trouble and grief almost continually, since my walk with our Lord began many years ago.

ONE 1

You know, my friends, there is a reason why the Lord has promised us a new and unique name; it is because we are unique, in our lives and in our walk of faith; we are made one in Him who is the Door to the Father; but we must never forget that there are as many pathways to this Door -- our Risen Lord -- as there are souls who are called to find it. A brother or a sister is different because they were made to be different; it is a source of our strength and should not be made a point of our contention.

It is thus that Christ deals with us still, apportioning our trials to our strength, our discipline to our spiritual capacity. We long to know God’s secret plans for our lives, and for those whom we love. Where does the path lead which we are treading, and which swings and dips so swiftly and abruptly? How much longer must the fight be maintained between Truth on the cross and evil on the throne? What is the explanation of the mystery of evil, of the sorrow and agony of the world? And our Lord replies: “My child, you cannot bear to know now. Trust me, I will tell you as soon as you are able to understand.” And the most important part of His response is contained in those two little words, TRUST ME -- in all things, TRUST ME -- at all times, TRUST ME. For trust is the key to His learning curve.

An Eventide Devotional, Volume 39: A Sound Mind

Do you not see, my friends, do you not understand? Life is empowered and sustained by Life. It is God's ordained law throughout the cosmos: this law is expressed to us as His grace. The believer lives unto and within the Spirit, and his life springs from, and is nourished only by Life -- the Life of our risen Savior. Our soul lives, and possesses true vitality only in Him as it is fed and nourished by His Living Spirit that He has implanted in each of His lambs. It is the blood that makes atonement, and gives us life; but it is the coming of the Spirit, at our Lord's bidding, that nourishes and empowers our lives with all the riches of our Father's bounty -- foremost among these are His gifts of love, power, and of a sound mind.

For with only these three gifts in His abundance -- love; power, and a sound mind -- we can do all things; and certainly we can accomplish that to which we have been called

Our Master’s conception of this peace is given in His often repeated words, “I and My Father are one.” When one life flows into another life with seamless perfection; commingling—will with will, soul with soul, heart with heart, the two become one, this is the the essential secret of experiencing and living in His peace. And when that perfect commingling is between the the lamb's heart and God, he will have learned the secret of perfect peace. That was the peace our Lord enjoyed -- His peace, and this is the peace He has promised and provided, “My peace I give unto you.”

But until the Lord is pleased to drive us to this moment, to our own point of despair, and teach us through His Spirit of Illumination, we never can part with our own righteousness — never give up our own wisdom — never abandon our own strength. These things are a part and parcel of ourselves — they are who we are; so ingrained and innate within us, that we cannot willingly part with them until the Lord Himself demolishes the house we have built up in our own strength. Then, as He flashes into our souls the vision of our corruption and our folly in a thousand ways, and our blindness to all things of the spirit — our wisdom fades away. As He shows us our inability to resist temptation and overcome sin, by any exertion of our own — our confidence in our own strength and righteousness dissipates, and dies, as we begin, at last, to put on the new man.

Remember the days of our youth, my friends,
we ran after our lovers and sold ourselves
to them for food, for drink, for acceptance, for a life.

We were young, free, and all too natural,
and we eagerly chased after .......
the lusts of the flesh,
the lusts of the eye,
and the pride of life;
Here were our lovers that gave
us our food and drink, that so
pleased all of our passions and desires.

An Eventide Devotional, Volume 36: It Was Not The Nails

It was this load of imputed sin — the imputed sins of millions — a load unbearable for any other -- it was the tremendous pouring of the wrath of God into His innocent soul — it was the hiding of His Father's face, and the very fires of hell that sought to take hold of Him -- as prophesied in His Word: Many bulls have compassed me: strong bulls of Bashan have beset me round. They gaped upon me with their mouths, as a ravening and a roaring lion. I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint: my heart is like wax; it is melted in the midst of my bowels. Our suffering Savior drank the cup of the wrath of God to the very dregs — when the penalties for our rebellion were laid upon Him -- it pleased the Lord to bruise Him; as Isaiah wrote: He has put Him to grief: when You shall make His soul an offering for sin. This is what claimed our Savior's life: it was not the nails.

An Eventide Devotional 35: Intercession

We do not know what we ought to pray for. What shall we say before the our Heavenly Father? With what feelings, with what language, with what arguments shall we unburden our hearts, unveil our sorrows, confess our sins, and make known our requests? How shall we overcome the remembrance of past stumblings, the convictions of present guilt, the pressure of deep need, and the overwhelming sense of the Divine Majesty? Regularly, all believers feel these uncertainties within themselves -- we can sense that our need is great; but we often do not know quite where to begin, or even how best to approach Him . . . sometimes it almost seems that our prayers are beset in an atmosphere of uncertainty, confusion, and distraction

Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof. Matthew 6:34. He would have us fence off the days by themselves, and never look over the fence to think about tomorrow's cares.

The thought is, that each day is, in a certain sense — a complete life by itself. It has . . .
its own duties,
its own trials,
its own burdens,
its own needs.
It has enough to fill our heart and hands for the one full day.
